Yesterday Dr. Tu was recognized for his research activities at Creighton University's annual research symposium, St. Albert's Day. St. Albert's day allows students and faculty at Creighton to present their research as either a poster or oral presentation. Dr. Tu received his award at a special luncheon, followed by his keynote address. His talk focused on how his studies of RGS2 in prostate cancer led to his current interests in asthma. Dr. Tu stressed to students the need to be observant in their research. New discoveries can sometimes come from unlikely places.
Cameron Kieffer, a PhD candidate in Dr. Abel's lab presented a poster of his work at the Midwest Biomedical Research Forum here at Creighton University this past Saturday. The Forum showcases graduate student and post-doctoral research from across the Midwest region. Cameron's poster. entitled "The Effects of Nerve Stimulation in Mouse Lungs." described his work on using electrical field stimulation in precision cut lung slices to tease out the functional role of nerves in mouse models of lung disease.
Today Drs. Abel, Tu, and Oldenburg met to finalize details for upcoming experiments this semester. The main focus of the discussion was cigarette smoke exposure and the Buxco Smoke Generator. The group has some big plans for 2016 and every lab is excited to continue our lung research and to get one step closer to understanding smoke-related lung diseases.
This Wednesday, October 21, John C. Crabbe, Ph.D. will be speaking as part of the Creighton School of Medicine Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. Crabbe is a professor of behavioral neuroscience at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland where he has worked since 1979. His main research interest is in understanding the neurobiological bases for individual differences in behavioral susceptibility to drugs of abuse. He was invited by our group's very own Dr. Oldenburg. The title of the talk will be "Mice That Drink Too Much: The Genetics of Alcohol Binge Drinking." The talk will take place at noon in the Morrison Seminar Room at Creighton's Medicial Center. Hope to see you there!

Our final talk of our summer lecture series will be tomorrow, August 14th, in Criss III room 551 at 9:00am. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Oldenburg and will be entitled "Targeting Protein Kinase G to Treat Asthma." As always light refreshments will be provided. Thank you to everyone who has come to any of our group's research presentations and we hope to see you there on Friday!
Next Monday, August 3rd, Dr. Tu will give the second talk in our ongoing summer lecture series. The title of his presentation is "P-Rex1 Repression and Pulmonary Hyper-Innervation." Like our last lecture, it will take place in Criss III room 551 at 9:00am. I've heard that someone might be bringing bagels. See you on Monday bright and early!
Introducing the Creighton Smoking Disease Research Program summer lecture series! Over the course of the summer our group will be putting on three talks that revolve around the central themes of smoking and lung disease.
